Are you a large industry or small business in Seychelles that generates hazardous waste? If yes, as an hazardous waste generator you need to declare the type and quantity of waste generated for disposal and safe management to the LWMA. This platform will help you to facilitate your declaration.

Hazardous waste refers to any waste material that exhibits physical, chemical, or biological properties requiring special handling and disposal to prevent adverse effects to human health, the environment, or both (Joint UNEP/OCHA Environment Unit, 2011). Hazardous waste can exist in various forms, including liquids, solids, and gases. It may be generated by a wide range of sources - households, businesses, and public institutions alike – through activities such as industrial operations, healthcare services, and the use of everyday consumer products. Proper identification and management of hazardous waste are essential to ensure environmental safety and public well-being.

Examples of Hazard Waste include:

- Asbestos ,

- Chemicals, such as brake fluid or print toner,

- Batteries

- Solvents

- Pesticides

- oils (except edible ones), such as car oil

- Equipment containing ozone depleting substances, like fridges

- Hazardous waste containers

At present, there are no comprehensive solutions in Seychelles for the sustainable treatment of all types of hazardous waste. However, car batteries can be taken to certain exporters. Please do not hesitate to contact the Agency for further information.

Under S.I. 99 of 2021, the Environment Protection (Waste Services) Regulations 2021, the disposal of hazardous waste requires the completion of a Hazardous Waste Disposal Form. This online application simplifies the process, saves time, and enables both MECENR and the LWMA to manage hazardous waste disposal data more efficiently and effectively.

As per S.I. 99 of 2021, Environment Protection (Waste Services) Regulation, 2021, the hazardous waste accepted for disposal under the class 10 are:

- Asbestos,

- Toxic chemicals,

- Paints,

- Chlorine,

- Ammonia,

- Acids,

- Alkalis solutions,

Please be mindful that the LWMA’s landfill is not adapted for the disposal of hazardous waste. MECENR conjointly with the LWMA and private operators are looking at the best suitable solutions for the disposal of hazardous waste.

Yes, you can; however, each application is designated for one specific hazardous waste.

There are two options for submitting the application:

- You may complete it yourself, in which case you will need to coordinate directly with an accredited hazardous waste contractor for transportation modalities and date.

- Alternatively, After reaching an agreement with an accredited hazardous waste contractor the application can be submitted by the contractor on your behalf.

No. Transporting or disposing of hazardous waste independently is not permitted unless you have specific authorisation from the Agency. To ensure safety and regulatory compliance, hazardous waste must be managed through one of our authorised waste contractors, as listed below.

"A Safety Data Sheet (formerly called Material Safety Data Sheet) is a detailed informational document prepared by the manufacturer, distributor or importer of a hazardous chemical. It describes the physical and chemical properties of the product. The data sheet contains useful information, presented in 16-section format, such as toxicity, flash point, procedures for spills and leaks, storage guidelines, and exposure control.".

As per the type of hazardous waste, Public Health Authority and SFRSA need to endorse some disposal requests before final approval.

Yes. As per the Environment Protection (Waste Services) Regulations, 2021, the LWMA reserves the right to refuse disposal requests if minimum safety requirements are not met on-site, or if the waste cannot be safely handled and processed by the LWMA.

If your request is not accepted, please refer to the relevant Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for guidance on safe storage or temporary retention until appropriate treatment or disposal options become available
